Where this comes from
I ran a discovery checklist with the finance lead at a four-store natural grocer here. Nothing has been built for them yet. The finance lead had already built Claude projects and a reporting pipeline. The gaps were staff not using those tools, credits for short or damaged deliveries that took too much follow-up, margin tools staff didn’t use, loyalty data nobody mined, and instructions the finance lead wanted to give once and not repeat.
What’s local about it
Independent grocers here compete with big chains. Every credit owed, cost that drifted or billback never claimed comes straight out of margin.
Tennessee taxes food at a lower state rate than other goods, so the item file in your POS has to mark which items are which. When costs and items get changed by hand, that file is where the mistakes hide.
Why in person helps
A grocery back office is easier to understand standing in it. I’d rather watch a delivery get checked in than hear about it on a call.
